This past Monday was another musical trifecta in the form of audio/visual/print. It actually started on Sunday. I was making my morning rounds across the Internet. I discovered three new groups to bookmark. In no particular order, they are Hymns, The Pierces, and Pistolera. Sampling their fresh new sound (to me), I was wanting more. This was one the rare occasions of finding new music and then having a need to purchase the physical media the next day. One is believable, but three? Well it turned into 4 albums as I also picked up the Gossip's Live At Liverpool CD/DVD.
I also finally made up my mind and bought a ticket for The Black Angels CD release party at Emo's next month. I snagged the newest issues of Filter and XLR8R magazines. Filter's cover sports the Flight of the Conchords doing their best rendition of American Gothic. Truth be told, I really don't read XLR8R. These last of couple weeks I been having a electronic music itch. Looking at the April '08 cover, the recognizable names M83, Jamie Lidell, and Miss Kitten grabbed my attention. As usual, this all went down at Waterloo Records. But before I could leave the store, I noticed a big box of CDs. It's Sub Pop Records’ 20th Anniversary and their is a free sampler CD to be had. Check your local record store(s).
As for the visual part of this story, it can only be left to the Icelandic group Sigur Rós. The Alamo Drafthouse at the Ritz was screening Heima. It's a film featuring interviews with the members and footage from a series of free concerts held in their homeland. It's a wonderful combination of music and life.
