Aamo Drafthouse: Porky's Pepperoni
This is what I ate during the special Donnie Darko: Director's Cut screening, more on that later.
Quizno's Sub: Smokehouse Beef Brisket, a double portion of slow-roasted, mesquite-smoked beef brisket, with melted cheddar cheese, topped with sweet and smoky barbecue sauce. Damn tasty.
Sunday evening I had a couple things to do in Austin. But first, I stopped by Aljon's Pizza & Italian Restaurant. It's been years since my one and only time going three. More on that some other day. I entered the empty restaurant and was greeted at the counter by an animated, excited, little Korean girl. She couldn't have been more than four years old. Being South Korean on my mother's side, I was somewhat amused. As she hoisted herself onto a stool to reach the counter top, I looked around for any adults. I could see dude in the kitchen working on other orders. I began scanning the menu board, trying to take in all at once. At the same time, the little girl wiped open a paper menu, pointing out everything I could order. In her little whispery voice, she was telling me I could get "this" and "this" and "this" and so on. As looked back at the wall menu, she kept grabbing at my hand and pointing to the paper menu. "Yes, I see" I told her with a smile. Finally, dude came out and I ordered a spaghetti with meat sauce and an ice tea. After paying and getting my drink, I started turning away and caught out of the corner of my eye, the little girl leaving the counter area. Sure enough, as I sat down in a booth, there she was standing at my side, all bouncy with a smile on her face.
"What's that?" she said while pointing.
"That's a camera" I replied.
"And that?" she said as she tried to stretch across the table.
"That's a phone" I answered.
"Oooh, I have one" she informed me.
"Ah, okay" I said, realizing this may never end.
I locked onto the television in front of me. She then climbed into a booth...in front of me. She turned to face me with her hands to the side of her face, trying to get my attention. I was politely trying to ignore her, which was difficult since she was looking right at me, just four feet away. I didn't want to be an ass, but I felt like some proper adult supervision was in order. Maybe the adults who were actually responsible for her. She then busted out with the kindergarten "A-B-C's" song. Knowing how long it takes for a young child to get through it, I couldn't wait to get my food. Somewhere around "G", she grew tired of my lack of attention. Again, I didn't want to be the asshole. She got down from the booth and returned to the counter area.
While I waited, one by one, several other people came in to pick up their orders. They were also amused to be greeted by the little girl. Finally, my food arrived. Hmm, I thought to myself while looking at it. As I began to eat my way through the spaghetti, something seem odd. And then I realized, the little girl was Korean, the dude was also Korean. I was eating Asian style noodles. Now, I'm not one to hate, but Asian style noodles for Italian spaghetti just does not work for me. I almost ate all of it. I'll still go back and try the pizza, which I've seen good reviews for. I can only wonder if the little Korean girl will still be there.
Chuy's Lite Plate, crispy taco minus the guacamole & chile con queso and a side of chips and...more chile con queso.
